The county of Essex is in south east England and has Chelmsford as its county town. It’s name derives from the ancient kingdom of the same name. Essex has borders with a number of other counties including Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire. Chrishall Common is the highest point in the county at nearly 150 meters above sea level.
Due to its proximity to London many towns and villages in Essex act as commuter or dormitory towns for workers in the capital. The county is twinned with Jiangsu in China and Picardy in France.
